How much of our past would we truly know without images and sound?
Every documentary, film, archival video, radio broadcast, and television programme represents a valuable piece of our collective memory. Audiovisual heritage enables us to revisit defining moments in history, understand the social dynamics of different eras, and gain a more authentic perspective on the events, ideas, and values that have shaped our world.
Beyond its historical significance, audiovisual heritage serves as a lasting vehicle for culture. It preserves and passes on artistic creations, social perspectives, and cultural expressions that continue to influence societies across generations.
Recognising its importance, UNESCO established 27 October as the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage to raise awareness of the need to safeguard these invaluable resources, which are constantly threatened by the passage of time, the physical deterioration of storage media, and the rapid evolution of technology.
On this occasion, UNESCO encourages governments, organisations, and citizens to:
- organise events, exhibitions, and digital initiatives that highlight the challenges of preserving audiovisual materials and raise awareness about the risk of losing invaluable archives;
- educate the public on the importance of safeguarding audiovisual heritage;
- invest in the digitisation and long-term preservation of audiovisual collections.
Preserving audiovisual heritage is not only about protecting the past—it is an investment in the future. By ensuring access to the stories, experiences, and cultural narratives of previous generations, we empower younger generations to appreciate the lessons of history and strengthen the shared cultural identity that connects us all.
Through its long-standing commitment to the creative and cultural sectors, MusicEra actively contributes to the preservation and promotion of audiovisual heritage. The organisation collaborates with institutions and stakeholders to develop initiatives that raise awareness of its importance while promoting sustainability within the cultural ecosystem.
Since 2024, MusicEra has been implementing the NSA (H) – Navigating Sustainability in Art Heritage Sponsorship Programme, an initiative designed to support creators, artists, and producers in developing sustainable cultural projects. The programme also provides organisations with a ready-to-implement sponsorship opportunity that strengthens their Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategies by supporting projects with meaningful cultural and social impact.
